Renewables to produce more energy than coal in the US for the first time this year

The US is on track to generate more energy from renewable sources than coal this year, as reported by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). By the end of 2022, over 20% of the country’s electricity will come from hydropower, wind, and solar, surpassing coal’s 20% and nuclear’s 19%. This has only occurred once before in 2020 when energy production was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2019, solar and wind power have increased by 58%. The EIA predicts renewable sources will contribute 22% and 24% of US electricity generation in 2022 and 2023, respectively, while natural gas is expected to decline from 38% in 2022 to 36% in 2023. The share of energy production from coal has steadily decreased over the years, and it is projected to decrease from 20% to 19%.
