Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’: Everything to Know About the Film’s Release Date, Plot and 1st Wave of Reviews

Finally, after much anticipation from fans and the cast, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick landed in theaters in May, featuring Cruise, who played pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 1986 Top Gun movie. In the summer of 2017, Cruise, now 59 years old, announced that a sequel was in the works and shared that the film would maintain the same tone and style as the original. The first film followed a novice Maverick, played by Cruise, as he trained at the United States Navy’s elite fighter weapons school and competed with Val Kilmer’s Iceman for the coveted title of “top gun,” or the best pilot in the class. In Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise’s character returns to his old school to train the newest recruits, including Miles Teller’s Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of his deceased friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards in the original film.
