What to Know About the School Shooting in Uvalde, Texas

An 18-year-old individual, identified as Salvador Ramos, killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24 using an AR-15-style rifle. This tragedy marks the deadliest school shooting since the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, which claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults. The incident began when Mr. Ramos crashed a pickup truck in a ditch near the school and then proceeded to shoot his grandmother in the face at her nearby residence before entering the school. The gunman targeted a pair of connected fourth-grade classrooms, where he carried out the shootings that resulted in the loss of lives and left more than a dozen others injured. Despite the quick response of multiple agencies, including scores of officers, there was a delay in confronting the shooter, which led to frustration among parents gathered outside. The Border Patrol officers eventually entered the classrooms and fatally shot Mr. Ramos over an hour after he entered the building.
